COURSES

General English
General English courses run throughout the year. These courses can be of 1 - 52 weeks in length, but a minimum of 2 weeks is recommended. They are well suited to people using English in their work, studies or on holidays.

Programmes are available for beginners, those with some knowledge of the language (intermediate levels) and those that feel they have quite a strong grasp of the languaidiomas CIC- 04ge (advanced levels).

English for Specific Purposes
As well as providing General English Courses, the school's Plymouth English Centre (PEC) also offers Alternative English Language courses to those wishing to study a specific area of interest, such as business, medicine, law, and finance.

Like the General English Courses, these courses also concentrate on developing students’ fluency in the four key communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, but focus on their specialised area of interest. This is achieved through a combination of teaching and learning exercises that are built on the participants’ course requirements.

E.S.P courses are arranged on request and are made to suit each student's individual requirements on one-to-one tuition basis, or in closed groups.

  • Course Start: Negotiable
  • Length of course: from 1 to 52 weeks
  • Hours: 15, 20, 25 or 30 hours per week

Business English
Ideally, for upper intermediate to advanced students but can easily be modified for groups at other intermediate levels, this course integrates the key aspects of grammar and essential vocabulary, current topics and business skills.

All the four language skills are given practice and each unit introduces vocabulary and language most relevant to the field of business, with a special focus on skills based activities such as presentations, negotiations and meetings, where pair and teamwork, and case studies form an essential part of the course.

This course would be extremely beneficial for students already studying business subjects wishing to improve their communication skills in English and extend their knowledge of the real world of business, and also for those already active in the field of business that have a need to use English more effectively in their day-to-day work.

Business English courses are also run all year round and can be of 1 - 52 weeks in length. Knowledge of basic English, at a minimum, is required for these courses.

Medical English
This course provides comprehensive practice in medical vocabulary, procedures and more specific application of the language to real-life situations. The topics for each unit have been carefully chosen in order to create interesting, useful and authentic contexts for a fuller understanding of the language. The lessons have been structured to allow opportunities for the student to practise and use the language in a natural and realistic way. Each session is built on a specific topic, where the vocabulary, grammar, listening, writing and speaking exercises are all closely connected to the theme of the session in question. All the lessons are conducted by experienced and highly qualified EFL teachers working together with practising physicians.

Please Note: that the Medical English Courses include visits to local Hospitals and Medical Practices within the price.

Legal English
This course is designed to give practice in vocabulary concerned with law, related procedures and more specific application of the language to real-life situations.

Each unit has been carefully chosen in order to create interesting, useful and authentic contexts for a fuller understanding of the language. The lessons have been structured to allow for chances for the student to practise and use the language in a natural and realistic way. Each session is built on a specific topic, for example; vocabulary for client consultation, a recorded conversation of a consultation between a solicitor and a client, completing a client file after consultation and role plays; related practice where the vocabulary, grammar, listening, writing and speaking exercises are all closely connected to the theme of the session in question. All the lessons are conducted by experienced and highly qualified EFL teachers working together with practising lawyers.

Please Note: In the Legal English Course, visits to local law firms and the law courts are included in the price.

Financial English
Studying Financial English provides you with the skills and terminology to operate in an international financial environment, for example, when you need to write financial reports in English or expand your knowledge of the skills and language associated with mergers and acquisitions. Each session is built on a specific topic, for example, Retail Banking Services, International Markets, Foreign Exchange, Credit Control, Investments, Loans, Trade Finance, Personal Financial Services and Mergers & Acquisitions; where the vocabulary, grammar, listening, writing and speaking exercises are all closely connected to the theme of the session in question. All the lessons are conducted by experienced and highly qualified EFL teachers working together with practising accounts and financial advisors.

Work Experience Programmes
Whether you want an unpaid work experience (internship) placement, a paid work placement or an expert exchange programme, the school has the right solution for you. Based on the wide range of companies we work with, we have successfully placed trainees in a wide variety of internships since 2002.

All these programmes aim:

  • To develop a greater understanding of the use of English language in a business environment
  • To increase the understanding of the commercial and industrial culture in the UK
  • To provide the participants an improved Curriculum Vitae to further their future employment prospects
  • To contribute to the companies’ performance.

The organisation of work experience requires much expertise and know-how, as the arrangement and administration of tailored placements for undergraduates, graduates and professionals is not an easy task. We have perfected our systems and procedures and can offer a high-quality service to participants of 14 and above and all vocational and academic backgrounds. Our international placement team is experienced in understanding the different cultures and backgrounds of participants from the different parts of the world, which enables us to react professionally, efficiently and caringly to all queries, uncertainties and possible problems our customers may have.

In line with this, our host companies are experienced in training, monitoring and guiding our participants and meeting their individual expectations and needs. Our aim is to visit and inspect these companies regularly, which guarantees that the placement quality is maintained and health and safety regulations and equal opportunities policies met.

In addition to these core activities, the school Work Experience also provides a range of focussed English language programmes to provide additional language support at a low cost.

Many outdoor events and festivals are held in Plymouth including the British Fireworks Championships and Music of the Night, an outdoor production held every two years in The Royal Citadel involving the 29th Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, The Royal Artillery Band, the band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines and hundreds of local amateur performers. The Plymouth Morris Men perform throughout the year at many events and venues.

Theatres and cinemas
The largest is the Theatre Royal which is a major provincial producing theatre and it also incorporates an integral studio theatre, The Drum. The Theatre Royal recently opened its architectural prize-winning Production and Education Centre, known as TR2, on the reclaimed waterfront site at Cattedown.

On the Barbican is the Barbican Theatre. The University has two well-equipped theatres within the new Roland Levinsky Arts Building. Amateur dramatic societies and schools of dance regularly perform at the Athenaeum Theatre, Devonport Playhouse, and the Globe Theatre in the Royal Marine barracks.

The Plymouth Pavilions opened in 1991, and stages regular music concerts from rock and pop to ballet, and other live events.

Plymouth Music Accord is a charity that promotes classical music and consists of many local amateur and professional orchestras and choirs. Peninsula Arts is the public arts interface between the University and local people.

There is a large multiplex cinema at the Barbican Leisure Centre and a three-screen cinema in Derry's Cross. In Looe Street the Plymouth Arts Centre has a two screen cinema specialising in art house and foreign films while the Roland Levinsky arts building at the university has a film centre showing a catholic range of films.

Museums, art galleries and historic buildingsPlymouth nightlife
The Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery in Drake Circus, near the shopping mall, has collections of fine and decorative arts, natural history and human history.

The Plymouth Arts Centre is located near the Barbican, and regularly offers visiting displays of work by a wide range of local, British and international artists such as Beryl Cook, Richard Deacon, Andy Goldsworthy and Sir Terry Frost. As well as promoting visual arts, many independent art house and foreign films are shown.

A converted church on North Hill, now the Sherwell Centre and part of the university, hosts regular exhibitions, concerts, recitals, lectures and other public events. There are smaller and privately owned retail galleries on The Barbican.

Also in Plymouth are the Plymouth & West Devon Record Office; Smeaton's Tower; the Elizabethan House and Merchants House in The Barbican. Plymouth is home to the National Marine Aquarium. The Ashkenazi synagogue, in Catherine Street, was built in 1762.

Nightlife
A centre of Plymouth's nightlife for over a century has been the once infamous Union Street. Once lined with numerous music halls and cinemas, the street is now run down and home to a decreasing number of bars, clubs and casinos. Union Street maintains a reputation for unruly drunken behaviour but still may host a lively night out. Although most clubs play commercial dance and R&B, there are some which play other, less popular genres. Other clubs and bars are at the Barbican Leisure Park the jazz club is one by the harbour side and on Lockyer Street. There are a number of bars with live music. Mutley Plain has many bars due to the increase of student population in the city.

National fears about public disorder and excessive drinking have locally resulted in the making of many large "dispersal areas" and designated "no drinking areas", giving police the power to disperse groups of two or more and seize and dispose of any alcohol being carried or drunk in public spaces.

ACCOMODATIONEnglish course in Plymouth, english in England

Our Accommodation Manager will be pleased to arrange accommodation for you in Plymouth. You can choose from:

  • Self-catering
  • Bed & Breakfast Guesthouse
  • Homestay (host family) with half or full board
  • or stay in a hotel

All our accommodation is carefully chosen, visited and monitored to ensure that standards are maintained and that you will be comfortable and happy. We keep in close touch with all our accommodation providers and applicants, and deal with any problems, which might arise (although, as our families are so nice, there are very few).

We recommend home stay accommodation for those who wish to benefit from home comforts and a family atmosphere. Staying with a host family is probably also the best way to practise your English and generally learn about the British way of life. If two applicants are placed with the same host family, we try to ensure they are not of the same nationality, and, therefore, English is spoken at all times! All host families are a maximum of 30 minutes’ walk from the school or work place.

The accommodation is selected before you arrive, if you book a programme at a short notice, the accommodation officers will naturally do their best to find suitable accommodation, but we would advise you to book accommodation at least four weeks before the date of your arrival to guarantee the most suitable results.
