The High School Preparation Course integrates language, language skills, school subject area content, study skills and cultural information in order to provide a framework for a total learning experience for students which will assist them to participate effectively in subject area classes in high school and in the wider community.
These learning experiences are complemented by regular excursions with their teachers to places of interest for educational enrichment.
Main Course Objectives:
- To develop English language skills and knowledge of the school system required to function successfully in an Australian High School.
- To familiarise students with a range of teaching/learning activities and techniques used in Australian secondary schools.
- To assist students to increase their vocabulary by teaching subject specific language which they will require in any Australian High School.
- To assist students to develop independent study and learning skills which are required by all Australian schools.
- To enable students to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Australian society and to enable them to participate within that society.
There are two Levels of High School Preparation Course:
- High School Preparation (HSP) A - Pre-Intermediate and Above
- High School Preparation (HSP) B - Beginner and Elementary
Prior to commencing the High School Preparation course, students will sit for the compulsory placement tests during the orientation. Based on these tests, the Director of Studies will place students in the class best suited to their level of English proficiency.
Course Duration: 4 – 48 weeks (25 hours per week)
Hours of study:
- 9:00am - 11:00am
- 11:15am - 1:15pm
- 12:15pm - 3:15pm
Course Content: The Course is organised with curricula, resources and materials based around the NSW Board of Studies syllabuses for secondary schools
Students will be studying subjects such as: General English, Australian Studies, Study Skills and Language related to subjects needed in High School e.g. Science, Mathematics, Geography, History, Commerce, Art, Music and Literature.
Special High School Preparation Option Class (Compulsory attendance) studying grammar, writing, conversation, reading and media
Assessment: Tests and assessments in all subjects are done regularly
Extra Curricular activities: Recreation is important besting order to ensure that the students are maintaining a healthy lifestyle and are able to maximize their educational opportunity. There are organised activities such as bowling, barbecues, bush, rainforest and mountain walking, beach fun and ball games Social functions such as luncheons and parties are organised specifically for High school aged students. In addition, sport is included as a part of the curriculum.
Entry requirements for HSP:
- Students must have completed Elementary School
- Minimum age of entry is 12
- A guardian and accommodation inspection is required for all under 18 students
- If the student will be studying in a Government School, the student must live with
the guardian
