The exams are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, published by the Council of Europe.
Cambridge ESOL provides a Special Arrangements service, for example for candidates with learning difficulties, hearing difficulties or visual difficulties.

TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (or) Teaching English as a Second or Other Language The organization was created out of professional concern over the lack of a single, all-inclusive professional organization that might bring together teachers and administrators at all educational levels with an interest in teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL). This acronym might be a substitute for TESL more than for TEFL. It is sometimes preferred over TESL because English can be a third, fourth or fifth, etc. language to a student.
TOEFL - Test of English as Foreign Language. Tests the ability of an individual to use and understand English (possibly biased towards American English) at a college level. It is required for non-native applicants at many American and English speaking colleges and universities.The test was first administered 1964 and has since been taken by nearly 20 million students.The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) tests are similar, but oriented towards British English, and for positions within educational institutions based on the British educational system. more information
