FREE TIME
Adelaide is a peaceful, spacious city with large parklands. It's not too crowded, and easy to get around. South Australia is 'The Festival State' so when you're not studying, there is always plenty to see and do. You can walk through the pedestrian shopping malls, during the day, then check out the entertainment in the evenings. Eat out in high quality low priced restaurants, try your luck in the Casino, drop into a nightclub or go and see a movie at one of Adelaide's world-class cinemas. Many overseas students find that Adelaide is a great place to study, with its low cost of living and beautiful environment. The city is also well-known for its cultural and sporting events. There are the museums and Art galleries, the Aboriginal Cultural centre at Tandanya, and the top class sporting events, festivals and concerts held throughout the year.
Spend some time browsing through Adelaide's markets where you can buy all kinds of international food and hear some of Australia's many languages being spoken. After decades of immigration, Australia is now one of the most multicultural countries in the world. Visit Hahndorf and hear German being spoken. Take a walk through Chinatown for Korean, Japanese or Mongolian restaurants. For different tastes, try the Mexican, Italian, Swiss or French cuisine - just for starters!
As you travel into the hills, look back at a city of 1 million people, at the miles of clean empty beaches and the Southern Ocean. Keep going and discover the heart of Australia's wine region. Stop at some of the wineries for free tastings. A day at Cleland Wildlife Park is a 'must.' You can feed the kangaroos, touch a snake or have your photo taken holding a koala. Further north are the spectacular Flinders Ranges and the outback, where you can take a 4WD (Four Wheel Drive Tour).
There are miles and miles of unspoilt beaches and with South Australia's ideal climate, you can enjoy them at almost any time of year. Take the tram from the city to Glenelg to see one of Adelaide's most popular beach areas, or the ferry from Cape Jarvis to Kangaroo Island to see South Australia's rich wildlife in its natural environment. From May to October you can do some whale watching at Victor harbour, or hire some gear and try water sports like surfing, bodyboarding or windsurfing off the Southern beaches.
